Artist’s Talk and Launch of the German Website for the Online Exhibition “From Where Do We Speak?”

Since its inauguration in 2015, the Namibian-German project funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation put forward new approaches to combine arts and history in reflecting on the Herero and Nama Genocide in particular and (post-)colonial entanglements in general. Initially based at the research center ‘Hamburg’s (post-)colonial legacy’ at the University of Hamburg, the artists and historians created the exhibition ‘Ovizire • Somgu: From Where Do We Speak?’ at MARKK and M.Bassy (Hamburg) in 2018. The following year, the exhibition moved to the National Art Gallery of Namibia (Windhoek).
In 2019, the second iteration of the project began with a number of workshops and art projects were held in Namibian cities, resulting in the physical exhibition “From Where Do We Speak?” at the Frans Nambinga Arts Training Centre (Windhoek) and an online exhibition by the same name at StArtArtGallery.
Now, the translated contributions of the second iteration return to Germany to give new impulses to the debates on German-Namibian relations and how to address genocide and reconciliation through art. Some of the core contributors reflect on the project and look forward.
Im Jahr 2015 gestartet, hat das von der Gerda Henkel Stiftung geförderte namibisch-deutsche Projekt „From Where Do We Speak? / Von woher sprechen wir?“ neue Ansätze zur Verbindung von Kunst und Geschichte in der Reflexion über den Genozid an Herero und Nama im Besonderen und (post-)koloniale Verflechtungen im Allgemeinen entwickelt. An der Forschungsstelle „Hamburgs (post-)koloniales Erbe“ an der Universität Hamburg angesiedelt, erarbeiteten die Künstler*innen und Historiker*innen die Ausstellung „Ovizire – Somgu: From Where Do We Speak?“ im MARKK und M.Bassy (Hamburg) im Jahr 2018. Im darauffolgenden Jahr ging die Ausstellung in die National Art Gallery of Namibia (Windhoek).
2019 begann die zweite Projektphase mit einer Reihe von Workshops und Kunstprojekten in namibischen Städten, die in der physischen Ausstellung „From Where Do We Speak?“ im Frans Nambinga Arts Training Centre (Windhoek) und einer gleichnamigen Online-Ausstellung bei StArtArtGallery mündeten.
Nun kehren die übersetzten Beiträge der zweiten Auflage nach Deutschland zurück, um den Debatten über die deutsch-namibischen Beziehungen und die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit Völkermord und Versöhnung neue Impulse zu geben. Einige der Hauptakteure reflektieren das Projekt und blicken in die Zukunft.
